The ThyroLDN Study

Do you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis?
Are you prescribed thyroxine?
Do you still experience hypothyroid symptoms?

If you answered yes to the 3 questions above, we invite you to participate in a placebo-controlled study investigating whether low dose naltrexone added to usual thyroxine treatment improves quality of life in people living with hypothyroidism?

Naltrexone is an approved medication for the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence. However, naltrexone given in a lower dose may have anti-inflammatory effects that may be beneficial to patients with autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease.

It’s May and it’s the Australian Thyroid Foundation Awareness Month!

Media Release

Avoid Iodine Deficiency with Healthy Food Choices

Tobacco smoking, too much alcohol and other substances can all have an affect on a supposedly healthy person’s thyroid gland health. Especially if they have a family history of thyroid disorders and it is possible they could develop a thyroid autoimmune disease.

Patient's Medication Choice of Brand

Patient's Medication Choice of Brand

Pharmacist regulations changed this year. Pharmacists are now permitted to dispense bio-equivalent formulas of medications to patients on a generic basis when the 'Brand Substitution Box" has not been ticked on a prescription. The ATF continue to receive complaints from patients who have been given a different brand that what they usually take and have been prescribed.

It is now becoming a serious problem, as pharmacists quite often:

Change brands/formulas, without consulting first with patients

Patients can be told their original brand has been discontinued

Patients can be told their thyroid medication no longer needs refrigeration when given a different brand/formula to the one they usually take

Patients are not told that while certain brands/formulas are listed as being biologically equivalent that does not mean they are interchangeable in any given patient.

Patients are often confronted and in some cases bullied into taking a brand the pharmacist has chosen to stock, instead of the patient's original brand and the one that works for them.

They are not all the same, even though they may be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits List as being biologically equivalent!

The active ingredient of brands/formulas can vary from one brand to another, as can the excipients and therefore they are not all the same, which pharmacists should know.

Patients have a choice of brand, which their treating doctor has prescribed based on their medical history, diagnosis and performance of a particular brand/formula. This must continue to be respected by pharmacists to ensure patients continue to benefit, feel well and their thyroid health is not compromised. Thyroid conditions vary from thyroid cancer, to thyroidautoimmune disease, pregnancy and thyroid and more. Doctors base their prescribed brand/formula on a patient's diagnosed condition, blood results and the best brand/formula they believe will benefit the patient and carefully adjust the dosage of that particular brand of Levothyroxine until they achieve an optimal result with an individual patient.

The ATF recommends patients should continue on their original brand. A brand/formula should only be changed after a patient has consulted their treating doctor and if the doctor believes it is necessary, not changed on a pharmacist discretion. New brand/formulas should only be dispensed to patients who are newly diagnosed or when the treating doctor believes there is a medical reason to change to another brand of medication.

Pharmacists are not thyroid specialists, do not know the patient's medical history or diagnosed thyroid disorder and therefore should do what they are there for, to dispense a prescribed medication.

May is Thyroid Awareness Month

MEDIA RELEASE

May 2022

‘BEFORE YOU PLAN A FAMILY, HOW IS YOUR THYROID HEALTH?’

May is the time of the year for the Australian Thyroid Foundation’s (ATF) Thyroid Awareness Month.

Recent research from The Lancet – March 2022 emphasises the consequences and risks of an inadequate amount of thyroid hormone at conception, during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.

‘Without an adequate amount of thyroid hormone mothers can be exposed to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including gestational hypertension and preeclampsia or eclampsia, which affect around 10% of pregnant women and are the leading causes of maternal and neonatal mortality worldwide. Mothers who suffer from hypertensive disorders during pregnancy are at increased risk of long-term cardiovascular consequences and hypertensive disorders in subsequent pregnancies. Evidence also indicates a risk of reduced cognitive ability to their offspring.

Knowing if you are genetically predisposed to Hashimoto’s or Graves’ Diseases, which are both thyroid autoimmune disorders is important to be aware of, to ensure all appropriate tests are ordered. Autoimmune disorders may predispose mothers to a thyroid problem during pregnancy, says Professor Creswell Eastman, ATF Principal Medical Advisor.’

‘Unnecessary risks to a pregnancy and the mother’s health during pregnancy and ongoing is something that can be avoided and prevented. Raising awareness and ensuring thyroid tests are ordered by GP’s, when couples are planning a family and when the pregnancy is confirmed are both essential.

As statistics show over 1 million Australians are living with an undiagnosed thyroid disorder, awareness and testing can prevent unwarranted outcomes for mothers and their babies, says ATF CEO Beverley Garside.’

Pregnancy preparation and the mother’s health during pregnancy is something that is extremely important for all families. The ATF want to ensure the best outcomes for both mothers and babies are possible through awareness and education.

Media Release - Thyroid Awareness Month

MEDIA RELEASE

May 2021

‘TEST YOUR THYROID’

Statistics show that over 1 million Australians are living with an undiagnosed with some form of thyroid disorder, Be Thyroid Aware and Test Your Thyroid!

May is the time of the year when the Australian Thyroid Foundation’s (ATF) Thyroid Awareness Month, calls upon all Australians to be aware of their thyroid health.

Thyroid Disorders affect all Australians of all age groups and demographics. Awareness is the key to ensuring you do not overlook a thyroid disorder which could be affecting your health and wellbeing.

1 in 10 Australians will be affected by some form of thyroid disorder

7 of the 10 are women

Over 1 million Australians are undiagnosed

60,000 Australians are diagnosed each year

Thyroid Cancer is increasing, affecting younger Australians

Iodine Deficiency & Thyroid Disorders affect pregnancy outcomes for women of childbearing years.

“Thyroid testing is important for the diagnosis of a thyroid disorder. If you think symptoms you are experiencing may be due a thyroid disorder, please visit your doctor and ask for a Thyroid Function Pathology Test. Further testing is available if your doctor deems necessary. Testing will determine if your symptoms are thyroid related. Diagnosis can improve your quality of life and wellbeing – says Beverley Garside – ATF CEO.”

“Thyroid Disorders can affect patients of all ages and demographics in different ways, with women diagnosed more than men. Women of childbearing years also need to ensure their thyroid health and function has been determined and treated if necessary. Good Thyroid health during this life stage is essential for the development of the newborn – says Professor Creswell Eastman - ATF Medical Advisor.”

During May the ATF encourages all Australians to be aware of their thyroid health and visit their doctor to discuss symptoms, testing, family history of a thyroid disorders and to ensure your thyroid health is determined.

As the Australian Education, Support, Advocacy and Awareness Organisation the ATF wants all Australians to be aware and not ignore any symptoms which may be related to thyroid disease.

“All Australians should be aware of their family history - if members of your family have been affected by some form of thyroid disorder, please ensure you do not overlook any symptoms. Early detection is important, a simple blood test and if necessary a thyroid ultrasound examination if necessary will either determine or eliminate the possibility” states Professor Eastman – ATF Medical Advisor.

The ATF’s has been supporting and educating its members and the general public about the importance of Good Thyroid health for over 25 years! The ATF is very proud to have reached this milestone and we look forward to continuing our work into the future and continuing to raise awareness” says Beverley Garside – ATF CEO”

About the Thyroid

The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck, below the voice box. The thyroid gland is a soft, small bow-shaped gland, below the voice box or larynx (Adam’s Apple) on either side of the trachea (windpipe). Thyroid disease affects women more than men and is usually caused by an autoimmune disease. Iodine deficiency is the most common worldwide cause of thyroid disorders. Along with thyroid auto-immune disease, a low-iodine diet can cause hypothyroidism, an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre), infertility, pregnancy outcomes and foetal brain development. As part of the endocrine system, the thyroid plays a critical role in the healthy function of the body, influencing and regulating the activity of all cells and tissues. A healthy thyroid gland uses ingested iodine from iodine enriched foods to produce thyroid hormones which regulate body and brain growth and development, body temperature, energy levels and metabolic functions.

May is Thyroid Awareness Month in Australia, which incorporates World Thyroid Day (25 May) and International Thyroid Awareness Week (25-31 May)

Levothyroxine Supply Update

In response to ongoing concerns raised by members and patients about the limited availability of levothyroxine - marketed in Australia under the brands Oroxine®, Eutroxsig® and Eltroxin® - the ATF has continued to liaise with the manufacturers, Aspen Pharmacare (Aspen), about the recent supply shortage of these medicines.

Aspen has today informed the ATF that the pharmaceutical supply chain is currently under stress due to the increase in medicines stockpiling during March, including brands of levothyroxine, as a result of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. For this reason, Aspen has now brought forward the manufacturing of all levothyroxine brands; and has given the ATF an assurance that additional supply of these products have been released and should be available in Australian pharmacies this week.

Based on 'normal' use (i.e. the typical number of levothyroxine scripts that are filled in any given month), Aspen says it should have adequate supply to meet patient needs. Aspen is working closely with pharmacies to update them on availability of levothyroxine over the coming weeks and months, as they work to manage supply throughout the pandemic. For your information, please find below a copy of the letter from Aspen to the ATF regarding the current supply shortage of levothyroxine.

Should you have any concerns about the availability of your brand or dose of levothyroxine, please contact ATF CEO Beverley Garside via email on beverley@thyroidfoundation.org.au.

Take care and stay safe,

Celebrating 25 Years of the ATF!

2020 marks a significant milestone for the ATF – celebrating 25 years since the organisation first began.

The ATF was first established in 1995 by our Founder, Gail Ballantyne and her first committee, along with Gail’s treating specialist, Professor Steven Boyages. Their passion and commitment to set up a national thyroid patient support organisation with strong foundations has enabled it to continue onto today – 25 years later.

The ATF has helped thousands of Australian thyroid patients and their families over this time and without the ATF, these people would not have the support, education and information which is available through our organisation.

Today, our organisation continues with an Executive Committee who are all volunteers. By bringing their energy and dedication to the organisation, we can continue to provide the same important services that were part of the initial goal of the ATF. Together with our Medical Advisory Team, who are all world leaders in different areas of thyroid disease, we are proud the organisation has continued to meet patients’ needs.

ATF Ambassadors also give their time to promote the organisation and the importance of Good Thyroid Health whenever possible throughout Australia, via the media and other opportunities.

Most importantly, the ATF would not have lasted 25 years without our wonderful members. With your continued support through memberships, merchandise purchases and generous donations – as well as donations from the general public – our organisation has been able to continue to support Australians living with a thyroid condition.

To all of you, who have played a part in our journey, we say, THANK YOU!

While all events to celebrate our 25th Anniversary have been put on hold due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to updating you on these activities once the Australian Government has declared the risk of coronavirus to the community has subsided.

A COVID-19 Update from Thyroid Federation International

In this tough and unprecedented time, there is vast amounts of information circulating about COVID-19, which may be overwhelming and confusing. Some thyroid patients have questions on how does this impact them. There is no evidence that patients with thyroid issues have something more to worry as compared to the rest of the population. What each one of us can do is take proper recommended measures that are advocated by the WHO and Health Authorities in each of your countries. Maintaining safe distance (i.e. social distancing), wearing facemask, hygienic lifestyle i.e. thoroughly washing hands will minimise the chances of exposure. Best is not to take any chances of socializing outside your house. When going out for groceries please take all the precautions and keep a safe distance from others. Also being honest with yourself when and if you think there are symptoms to isolate yourself from others will be a key to containing the spread of the virus.

We also want thank and salute the amazing healthcare and medical providers who have been working tirelessly in response to this pandemic – we appreciate your efforts to keep the people of your countries safe during this pandemic.

Governments the world over have taken measures to stop the spread of COVID 19 by temporarily closing down places and traffic where people could come in contact with each other. Please strictly adhere to the advice on ‘social distancing’, it's better to NOT take any chances. Scientific communities are still discovering more about the virus each day.

You will find the following guidance most commonly seen on professional websites, please do follow this guidance:

Avoid close contact with people and strangers not known to you.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

It is especially important to clean hands after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

Avoid traveling if you are sick and also avoid crowded places

We understand this is a tough time for people all over the world, including our thyroid community. To ensure you have access to the right information, we have provided a few sites below, for your reference.
Thyroid Disease & COVID-19: A Message To ATF Members

On behalf of the ATF, our thoughts are with all Australians who have been directly impacted by COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) and their families, friends and loved ones. We also want to say thank you to the amazing medical providers and healthcare professionals who have been working tirelessly in response to this pandemic – our gratitude and appreciation for your efforts to keep Australians safe throughout this period cannot be overstated.

In this unique and unprecedented time, we know there is vast amounts of information circulating about COVID-19, which may be overwhelming and confusing. As such, we wanted to provide an update for Australians living with a thyroid disorder (incl. thyroid cancer, Hashimoto’s disease or Graves disease), to address any concerns you may have about the impact of COVID-19 on your health.

We have consulted our team of Medical Advisors for advice about this issue, to ensure you have the correct information.

What you need to know

While many people with a thyroid disorder may have an autoimmune condition (such as Hashimoto’s disease), this does not mean you are ‘immuno-compromised’. The part of the immune system that’s responsible for autoimmune thyroid conditions is separate to the immune system that’s responsible for fighting off viral infections, such as coronavirus.

You shouldn’t think of yourself as being immuno-compromised if you have thyroid disease. When health experts refer to ‘immuno-compromised’ people being at higher risk of COVID-19, they are typically referring to those who may have a history of leukaemias, malignancies, or who have undertaken chemotherapy. These are considered to be a true ‘recognised immune deficiency’, and are more uncommon. In addition, any patients who may be taking steroids, such as prednisone, could also be at risk for coronavirus.

Australians with a thyroid disease should follow the same hygiene precautions as the rest of the population to limit the spread of infection.

We understand this is a daunting time for all Australians, including our thyroid community. To ensure you have access to the right information, we have provided a list of resources below, for your reference.

Please ensure you follow the guidance of our federal and state governments and health authorities to help contain the spread of the virus. Be sure to follow appropriate hygiene precautions and social distancing, while observing advice about self-isolation and quarantining, should you come into contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Take care and stay safe,

May 2019 is Thyroid Awareness Month

‘The Many Faces of the Thyroid’: Why Aussies are being urged to “check your neck” this May

Approximately 60,000 new cases of thyroid disease are diagnosed each year in Australia.

Women are ten times more likely than men to be diagnosed with a thyroid disorder.

An estimated 1 million Australians may be living with an undiagnosed thyroid condition.

As it marks the start of this year’s Thyroid Awareness Month, the Australian Thyroid Foundation Ltd (ATF) is calling on all Australians to be more aware of their thyroid health during the month of May and to see their doctor for thyroid testing.

“In Australia, each year during May, we recognise Thyroid Awareness Month - an important opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of thyroid disorders, including thyroid cancer”, said Chief Executive Officer of the ATF, Ms Beverley Garside.

“This is particularly important as thyroid disorders can be difficult to diagnose, due to the common nature of the symptoms, which can often be associated with other medical conditions”, said Ms Garside.

Don't Forget International Thyroid Awareness Week is 21st – 27th May.

International Thyroid Awareness Week is 21st – 27th May.

Thyroid Federation International (TFI) instigated ITAW to recognise the importance of raising awareness worldwide through its member organisations. The ATF is a member of TFI.

World Thyroid Day is an annual awareness day that was established in 2008 during the congress of the European Thyroid Association (ETA). It focuses on increasing awareness of thyroid health and educating about prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases.

The thyroid gland, often referred to as simply the thyroid, is one of the largest endocrine glands. This butterfly-shaped gland is located in the neck. Hormones produced by the thyroid influence critical body functions and regulate metabolism, therefore thyroid health is extremely important.

Thyroid disorders are very common worldwide, they affect people of all ages and have a large range of symptoms. The most common thyroid disorders include hyperthyroidism (abnormally increased thyroid activity), hypothyroidism (abnormally decreased thyroid activity), thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) and thyroid cancer. They are often caused by iodine deficiency.

World Thyroid Day aims at increasing public awareness of thyroid deceases, namely the importance of their timely diagnosis, treatment and prevention. World Thyroid Day events and activities are coordinated by the European Thyroid Association, the American Thyroid Association, the Latin American Thyroid Society, and the Asia & Oceania Thyroid Association.

The ATF encourages you to visit the ATF website and explore the pages to learn more about the Thyroid and managing your thyroid health.

MAY IS THYROID AWARENESS MONTH 2018 - Be Aware of Your Thyroid.

The Australian Thyroid Foundation (ATF) wants all Australians to be aware of their thyroid gland and their thyroid health, during May, which is Thyroid Awareness Month!

The Thyroid Gland is a small bow-shaped gland, located in the front of the neck, below the voice box or larynx (Adam’s Apple) on either side of the trachea (windpipe). The thyroid gland produces hormones which give energy to the body’s functions and controls the body’s metabolism.

When the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, the consequences cause the body to slow. When the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, the body speeds and neither of these reactions are desirable. Thyroid health is so important to the way people function and how their body functions, says Beverley Garside – ATF CEO.

Thyroid Diseases can affect Australians from the very young to the elderly, with women affected more than men. When the thyroid gland is out of balance or diseased, everything from mental health, fertility, weight gain or weight loss and many other symptoms can be included.

Family thyroid history, auto-immune disease and iodine deficiency can all be responsible for the thyroid gland malfunctioning, so please be aware!

Thyroid cancer is affecting more Australians, with younger people being diagnosed. Proper early diagnosis and treatment is essential and the ATF support all current research that is improving outcomes for thyroid cancer patients.

Iodine, from a daily intake of iodine enriched foods, support the thyroid gland production of thyroid hormones. Therefore be aware of replacing the salt you use with iodised salt, eating a diet which includes dairy, eggs, bread and seafood, all sources of ingested iodine.

The ATF recommend all women of child bearing age should be aware of their thyroid function levels, family thyroid history and daily iodine intake. Thyroid function (TSH levels) and auto-immune disease testing (thyroid antibodies) are recommended to rule out a thyroid disorder during this life stage. Testing should be done as early as possible in pregnancy or prior to conception. Without enough thyroid hormone and a proper diagnosis, the pregnancy and foetal development can be affected.

The ATF says, Do Not Overlook Your Thyroid Health and discuss any concerns with your GP or treating doctor. Awareness, correct diagnosis and then treatment if necessary are what’s needed to improve Australians thyroid health.

NOTE:

Thyroid Awareness Month - May

May is Thyroid Awareness Month in Australia, which incorporates International Thyroid Awareness Week 21 – 27 May 2018 and World Thyroid Day 25 May.

About Thyroid Disease

The thyroid gland is a soft, small bow-shaped gland, located in the front of the neck, below the voice box or larynx (Adam’s Apple) on either side of the trachea (windpipe). Thyroid disease is usually caused by an auto-immune disease, which affects more women than men. Iodine deficiency is the most common worldwide cause of thyroid disorders. Along with auto-immune thyroid disease, a low iodine diet can cause hypothyroidism, an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) and can affect fertility, pregnancy outcomes and foetal brain development.

About the Australian Thyroid Foundation

The Australian Thyroid Foundation Ltd (ATF) is a member based organisation, managed by volunteers and was founded in 1995. The ATF is now the peak advocacy and support organisation for Australians living with a thyroid disorder. The ATF is a national not-for-profit organisation with a focus on providing education and support to its members and promoting Good Thyroid Health messaging throughout the community. The ATF is a member of Thyroid Federation International (TFI), a world-wide thyroid patient organisation dedicated to global action of thyroid related issues.

To protect your thyroid health, it is important to ensure you have a diet enriched with iodine. So dairy, eggs, seafood, bread (which includes iodised salt) and iodised salt are all ways to ensure you are receiving enough daily iodine through foods.

For pregnant and lactating women, it is essential they include iodine in their daily diet, to protect the pregnancy, and the growth and development of the baby. A pregnancy supplement, including at least 150mcgs of iodine daily, is also essential for women who are trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding. Ensuring their thyroid function is tested and adequate is also just as important.

The Most Common Symptoms Of Hashimoto's Disease

Womens Health Australia recently published an article on the common signs and symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease.

"Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This leads to inflammation and destruction of thyroid tissue, reducing its ability to produce the hormones that coordinate many of the body’s essential functions.

ATF Medical Advisory Board Member Awarded an Office of the Order of Australia

On behalf of the Australian Thyroid Foundation (ATF), we would like to congratulate our Chief Medical Adviser, Professor Creswell Eastman AO, who was awarded an Office of the Order of Australia (AO) as part of this year's Australia Day Honours list.

Professor Eastman’s AO was presented for ‘Distinguished service to medicine, particular to the discipline of pathology, through leadership roles, medical education, and as a contributor to international public health projects.’

Beverley Garside – ATF CEO was honoured to be invited to give a recommendation from the Office of the Order of Australia on behalf of Professor Eastman.

Professor Eastman has always shown great support and interest in the ATF and in 1997 as Director of ICPMR at Westmead Hospital found office space within his department for the ATF to use, including all the facilities of the department. This was a most generous offer and helped the ATF to conduct its daily duties and hold regular committee meetings. The ATF office space continued until his retirement as Director in 2006.

Professor Eastman supported the work of the ATF and promoted the organisation by inviting prominent Endocrinologists and Endocrine Surgeons to become Medical Advisors of the ATF. In 1999 the ATF honoured Professor Eastman with the title of Patron for the vast contributions he had made, and continues to make to the ATF. This included his continued research into Iodine Deficiency and the connection of Thyroid Disorders affecting pregnant women. This research has both proven to improve outcomes for future generations of Australian children and the Asia Oceania region of the world.

Until recently Professor Eastman was the Director of ICCIDD for the Asia/Pacific region and the Chair of the ACCIDD. Both are respected as world authorities for Iodine Deficiency.

In 2003, Professor Eastman invited the ATF to be part of the National Iodine Nutrient Study (NINS) which showed 50% of 8-10 year old school children were mildly iodine deficient. Further studies also showed 50% of pregnant women were also mildly iodine deficient. This research proved that without a daily iodine intake, the pregnancy and the developing baby can be impaired. Further research has shown that an adequate thyroid hormone level during this time is also important to this group of women and their pregnancy.

Professor Eastman was instrumental in forming a committee, which the ATF was a member. This committee recommended The Food standards of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) decision in October 2009 to introduce Mandatory Fortification of Iodised Salt into bread making to help overcome iodine deficiency in Australia.

From Professor Eastman research, The National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in January 2010 recommended all pregnant and breastfeeding women should ingest 250 mcgs of iodine daily through a pregnancy and breastfeeding supplement. Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot possibly get the recommended daily intake of iodine from food alone, so it is essential that they take a supplement during this time.

Professor Eastman has conducted Iodine Deficiency Research, in Tibet, China, Thailand and many other countries of the Asia Oceania region which has shown outstanding results in overcoming iodine deficiency. Many governments of this region have ruled that all salt manufacture must include iodine. Salt is the simplest and cheapest form of iodisation, which all humans use in their daily life and has proven to overcome iodine deficiency, goitre and cretinism in this region.

In 2014 Professor Eastman was awarded the Health Promotion Princess Award by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand. The award was presented to Professor Eastman for his outstanding research outcomes which he had completed in Thailand and improved iodine deficiency outcomes in Thailand.

Professor Eastman is currently researching iodine deficiency and thyroid health outcomes in central Australia. This research is primarily looking at young Aboriginal women of childbearing years. This group of women usually do not have a substantial iodine enriched diet, which impacts on their health and their pregnancies. It also shows poor development and learning outcomes in their children. Iodine supplementation is being provided for this age group to assess and improve outcomes for future generations of children in this area.

In 1975, Professor Eastman was one of the founding fathers of the Asia Oceania Thyroid Association (AOTA), the regional thyroid medical association. The AOTA brings together thyroid specialists and other associated medical professionals from this region and other parts of the world. Professor Eastman was instrumental in ensuring the ATF was invited to be part of the AOTA.

As a Clinical Professor and part of the facility at Sydney University, Professor Eastman continues to teach Endocrinology to medical students of the university, with his passion, enthusiasm, and experience projecting onto his students.

As CEO of The Australian Thyroid Foundation, I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive this award and promotion within the Order of Australia. Professor Eastman has made a lifetime commitment and contribution to improving outcomes of future generations of Australians and the Asian Oceania Region, through his iodine deficiency and thyroid disease research. His commitment to ensuring future generations reach the potential they were intended through his contribution to research is outstanding.

On behalf of the ATF, I would like to congratulate Professor Eastman as I am sure all ATF members and supporters, many who have been under his care as their Thyroid Endocrinologist, will wish Professor Eastman the very best in receiving this reward from the Office of the Order of Australia.

Beverley Garside
ATF Chief Executive Officer

Thyroid News Out Now - Issue #54

Here is a selection of the articles available in issue number 54 of "Thyroid News".

Does every thyroid cancer need treatment?
Professor Leigh Delbridge

There are mixed messages in the media about thyroid cancer. On one hand we hear that thyroid cancer, which up until now, had been considered a rare disorder, has shown a dramatic increase in cases worldwide with a tripling of incidence in the USA. In Australia currently, of all malignancies documented in the national cancer registries, thyroid cancer is the most rapidly increasing in females.

Name change of active ingredient of Oroxine, Eutroxsig and Eltroxin to align with international terminology.

Aspen Pharma has written to the ATF (letter included in the edition). The name of the active ingredient of Oroxine, Eutroxsig and Eltroxin has been changed in Australia to align with international terminology. Thyroxine will no longer be the name of the active ingredient, it will be now known in Australia as Levo-thyroxine, which is the international reference. Please be aware when speaking to your GP, Endocrinologist or Pharmacist.

Thyroid News No. 52 - Out Now!

Here is a selection of articles available in issue number 52 of "Thyroid News":

Eltroxin: a new brand of thyroxine replacement therapy is now available in Australia

Aspen, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the only brands of thyroxine (Oroxine and Eutroxsig) that have been available in Australia has now introduced a third brand of thyroxine for therapeutic use. The new product with the brand name of Eltroxin is being imported and is widely used overseas, particularly in Europe. It has now been approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Aspen claims that it is a new formulation and the big difference between Eltroxin and current brands is that Eltroxin does not need to be refrigerated, making it more convenient particularly for patients who may be travelling and needing to refrigerate their Oroxine or Eutroxsig medication.

10-15 years ago it was hard, very hard in fact to find gluten free foods for those individuals who needed them. The bread options were tasteless and crumbly. Snacks were virtually impossible to find and cakes and biscuits that were available were packed full of fats and calories. Fast forward till today and we now have an entire section of major supermarkets dedicated to gluten free foods; gluten free bread options are produced by the major bread makers and it is not uncommon to see gluten free menu options at popular restaurants. Food times are a changing.
