If you are experiencing either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid symptoms or physical changes to your thyroid gland, please visit your GP to discuss. Ask your GP to order Specific Thyroid Blood Tests and/or a Thyroid Ultrasound to either determine or eliminate a thyroid disorder. Your GP will also clinically examine you, with emphasis on the area of your neck where your thyroid gland is located to determine if your thyroid gland is enlarged or if any irregularity is detected. It is especially important to tell your GP if any of your family members have a Thyroid Autoimmune Disease, Thyroid Cancer or diagnosed with a form of Thyroid Disorder. Thyroid Disorders very often run in families and therefore should always be mentioned to your GP. The Correct Procedure When Having a Thyroid Blood Test

ATF Thyroid Blood Test Reference RangePlease Note:
Thyroid Blood Tests – All essential to ensure nothing is overlookedTSH – Thyroid Stimulating Hormone – a rise in the level of TSH indicates your pituitary gland is trying to stimulate your thyroid gland to produce more hormone. T4 – This test indicates the amount of thyroid hormone your thyroid gland is producing. If the result is low in the range or lower, your GP will prescribe a dose of Levothyroxine. If you have been prescribed Thyroid Replacement Hormone (Levothyroxine), this test will indicate if the amount prescribed is adequate. T3 – This test indicates how the hormone your thyroid gland is producing is absorbed or how the dose prescribed is absorbed. Thyroid Antibodies – TPO & TGO This test indicates if you have a genetic predisposition to a thyroid autoimmune disease – either Hashimoto’s Disease – underactive or hypothyroid or Graves’ Disease – overactive or hyperthyroid. Thyroid Autoimmune Diseases are hereditary and very often family members will be diagnosed with a thyroid autoimmune disease. Thyroid Ultrasound
If you have any physical symptoms to your thyroid gland, a Thyroid Ultrasound is requested to determine the physical health of the thyroid gland. This test shows the size, shape and texture of the gland and if any nodules have developed. This test is essential to ensure that any changes are determined.
